DIGITAL COMPUTERS FALL 2005 SEMESTER OVERVIEW


UNIT 1: Illustration and Design using Adobe Illustrator

Learn the user interface and basic tools of Adobe Illustrator

The tool palette: shape, line, pen, color, stroke, fill tools, selection tools.

More sophisticated uses of the pen tool and its associated tools: the add and subtract anchor point tools, the convert anchor point tool, the direct selection tool.

Sample Projects: Copy some simple designs that require shapes and lines of various strokes, fills, and sizes. Draw designs that require curves using the pen tool. Convert photographic images into shapes and designs for use in logo designs. Typography as a design tool. Design your own business logo and business card. Continue with geometrical art. Examine perspective and three-dimensional art.


UNIT 2: Photo Manipulation with Adobe Photoshop

Learn the user interface and basic tools of Adobe Photoshop

The tool palette: selection tools, move, resize, rotate, magic wand, masking, gradients. Advanced tools: layers, masks, opacity, blends, paths, clone stamp, history brush.

Sample Projects: Alter and/or make corrections to photographic images to create various effects and illusions. Use filters for strong visual effects and design concepts. Compositing (combining) photographic images for use in advertising, posters, package design. Using Illustrator and Photoshop together to combine vector and raster art.


UNIT 3: Web Design

An overview of the various scripting languages involved in creating the visual presentation style, structure, and interactivity of web pages: HTML, Javascript, CSS. The emphasis will be on presenting information and content in a simple manner with an elegant and easy to follow navigation style. Examine current trends in web design.

Sample Projects: Personal (autobiographical) website, celebrity website, art history project, scientific or historical research website. Other projects to be arranged.


UNIT 4: Animation using Macromedia Flash

Using the timeline, frames and keyframes, drawing tools, animation using tweening, user interactivity using Actionscript.

Projects: Flipbook animation using Muybridge photo sequences, simple cartoon style animation, simple interactive and gaming animations. Other projects to be arranged.


Final project: Self portrait using Adobe Illustrator.
